📜 Legal regulations and animal welfare law

* Greece has significantly tightened its animal welfare laws in recent years. Since the end of 2020, animal cruelty can result in fines of up to €50,000 and imprisonment for up to 10 years

* A key law is the "Animal Welfare Act 4830/2021"

It regulates the obligations of pet owners, the handling of stray animals, and includes penalties for mistreatment (eurogroupforanimals.org)

* Mandatory measures: Dogs and cats must be registered and microchipped; pet owners must ensure species-appropriate housing, care, and annual veterinary checkups

* Sterilization and the prohibition of abandonment are also intended to help
